School Supplies Beyond Pens and Paper

One of the key barriers for girls in Ethiopia continuing their education past the onset of puberty is access to menstrual supplies, soap, and a place to do laundry. In fact, the United Nations estimates that 10% or more of girls in the country miss school during their period. So when Girls Gotta Run says we provide school supplies, we include these vital items in our planning and budget.

Something as simple as a bar of soap can positively impact entire families. One of our Athletic Scholars told us her mother could not stop smiling when she brought home the soap received at school -- "she was so happy"! We provided soap and pads throughout the summer months, as well, because obviously the need for them does not take a summer break. Check out the photo below of our Soddo Program Manager, Kidist, distributing supplies last week.

So we do provide school uniforms, notepads, pens, and pencils. But we also provide the other school supplies the GGRF girls need to succeed in school, to train as athletes, and to boost their belief in themselves.

As always, we are so grateful for your help in this mission!
